RESIN INCENSE – WHAT IS IT? HOW TO BURN USING CHARCOAL

While most people are familiar with incense sticks, resin is really the original incense. It is obtained from refined tree and plant sap and has been used all over the world for thousands of years, even in ancient Biblical times. Compared to incense sticks, resin offers a stronger scent and doesn’t contain any unwanted additives. As natural resin doesn’t burn on its own, you’ll need charcoal tabs to burn resin incense. Simply light the charcoal, spread the resin on the charcoal using a small spoon and enjoy the rich resin fragrances.

Our traditional Athonite Style Incense is for either home or church use. We have a variety of fragrances, suitable for every service and devotional occasion. Athonite Style Incense is made by monks as part of their daily obediences. It is produced from pure frankincense resin and cut for use in charcoal burning censers.

Unlike traditional incense sticks, resin will not burn on its own. Resin incense is incense in the most pure and natural form. Resins are harvested from the sap, bark roots or wood of trees, shrubs, and plants.

YOU’LL NEED:

Resin Incense

Charcoal Tablets

Charcoal Burner

Rocks or Sand (OPTIONAL)

Tongs or Spoon

Stone Coaster or Tile (recommended)

There are many techniques for burning resin incense, this is just one of many. Place your burner (censer) on a heat resistant surface, such as a ceramic coaster or tile, as the bottom of the burner will become very hot and may result in damage to your surface.

Use a pair of tongs to place a charcoal disc in the incense burner. Hold a flame to the charcoal until sparks transverse the tab (charcoal). (Personally I find it easier to light it while in tongs, then placing it in my censer). Tabs ignite easily and quickly by holding a simple, small-flamed lighter to it. When the charcoal is fully heated, a gray, ashy soot will cover the red-hot, glowing tab. This indicates the charcoal is ready for use (takes an average of about 10 minutes). Using a small metal spoon or tongs, add 4-5 chunks of resin incense on top of the hot charcoal. This releases the highly fragrant incense smoke. Repeat if desired, until the charcoal is exhausted.

When finished, allow the charcoal to completely cool in the burner before discarding. When in doubt, dowse it with water. CAUTION: At no time should you touch the charcoal tablet once lit or attempt to move the charcoal burner. Both will be very hot and will burn you. Do not leave burning charcoal or burning incense unattended. Allow for proper air ventilation in the room where you are burning incense.
